Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo has declared Tuesday, October 7, 2025, a school-free day across Anambra State to celebrate and honor teachers in recognition of their invaluable contributions to education.
The announcement, made through a statement by the state’s Commissioner for Education, Prof. Ngozi Chuma-Udeh, in Awka on Monday, aligns with the global celebration of World Teachers’ Day, which fell on Sunday, October 5.
Prof. Chuma-Udeh explained, “In view of the fact that the 2025 World Teachers’ Day fell on a Sunday, Mr. Governor has approved Tuesday as a school-free day to celebrate and honour teachers in the state.”
The holiday will see all primary and secondary schools, both public and private, closed for the day, granting over 100,000 teachers a moment to reflect and be celebrated for their role in shaping Anambra’s future.
In addition to the holiday, a significant event is planned to mark the occasion. The Solution Parents League, a grassroots organization supporting Soludo’s education reforms, will hold a “mega endorsement march” to express gratitude for the governor’s transformative policies in the education sector.
The Association of Private School Owners will join the march, amplifying the show of support. The event is scheduled to take place at Alex Ekwueme Square in Awka, with teachers, parents, and school proprietors expected to gather by 8:00 a.m. for what organizers describe as a tribute to “give honour to whom honour is due.”
This gesture comes at a time when teachers across Nigeria are intensifying calls for better welfare and working conditions. On Sunday, during World Teachers’ Day events nationwide, the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) and other stakeholders highlighted ongoing challenges, including delayed implementation of the 65-year retirement age policy, poor remuneration, and inadequate classroom facilities.
These issues, they argued, continue to hinder the delivery of quality education. In Anambra, teachers have echoed these concerns but also expressed cautious optimism about state-level reforms under Soludo’s administration, which include teacher training programs and infrastructure upgrades.
The school-free day is expected to impact over 5,000 schools and 1.2 million students, offering a rare midweek break.
To ensure the day remains meaningful, the Education Commissioner urged schools to organize virtual tributes or reflective activities for teachers, emphasizing their role as nation-builders.
Meanwhile, the endorsement march is poised to showcase Soludo’s education agenda, which has seen increased budgetary allocations and digital learning initiatives since he assumed office in 2022.
Local reactions have been largely positive. Mrs. Chioma Okafor, a primary school teacher in Nnewi, called the holiday “a small but meaningful recognition of our work.” However, some parents, like Mr. Emeka Nwosu of Onitsha, expressed concerns about disruptions to the academic calendar, urging the state to ensure catch-up plans are in place.
Prof. Chuma-Udeh reassured the public that the Ministry of Education would monitor the situation to prevent learning losses. As Anambra prepares for Tuesday’s celebrations, the state stands out as a leader in recognizing educators’ contributions.
The event at Alex Ekwueme Square promises to be a vibrant display of unity, with teachers at the heart of the celebration, reinforcing Anambra’s commitment to education as a cornerstone of progress.
