Five Siblings Perish in Tragic Boat Accident in Benue

A devastating boat accident in the Obagaji community of Benue State has claimed the lives of five siblings, plunging the area into deep mourning.

The tragedy occurred on Sunday evening, October 5, 2025, when a small boat carrying a family of seven capsized in a river, resulting in the drowning of all five children onboard.

According to local reports, the boat, which was ferrying a man, his wife, and their five children, lost balance and sank under unclear circumstances.

While the parents were rescued alive by swift community response, the children could not be saved in time.

Local divers and residents mounted immediate rescue efforts, but all five children retrieved from the water were confirmed dead at the scene.

The incident has left the close-knit Obagaji community in shock, with sympathizers flooding the home of the bereaved parents to offer condolences.

“It’s a heartbreaking loss. The entire village feels this pain,” said Mr. Joseph Iorbee, a community leader, who noted that such accidents are rare but highlight the need for improved safety measures on local waterways.

Details surrounding the cause of the capsizing remain under investigation, with preliminary accounts suggesting the boat may have been overloaded or encountered a strong current.

The names and ages of the deceased children have not been released, pending notification of extended family members.

The tragedy underscores ongoing concerns about water transportation safety in rural Benue, where boats are a common mode of travel for riverside communities.

Local authorities have promised to investigate the incident and provide support to the grieving family, while residents are calling for better regulation of boat operations and provision of life jackets.
