FG Disburses Over ₦300bn to 8.1m Households

The Federal Government has distributed over ₦300 billion to 8.1 million households through the Conditional Cash Transfer scheme, Minister of State for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Yusuf Sanunu, announced at a roundtable event marking the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction in Abuja on Monday.

Sanunu highlighted that the initiative, under President Bola Tinubu’s Hope Agenda, has bolstered community resilience, improving health and education outcomes, with plans to sustain the effort.

He also revealed that 21,000 flood-affected Nigerians will soon receive interest- and collateral-free loans of ₦300,000 each, totaling ₦6.3 billion, to mitigate the impact of flooding on farming.

Additionally, a program in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Agriculture will support internally displaced persons (IDPs) by providing a market for their produce. Under the scheme, IDPs retain 30% of their produce, while the government purchases 70%, with proceeds returned to participants as cash.

National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) Director General, Zubaida Umar, emphasized the growing frequency of disasters driven by climate change, conflicts, and technological risks, calling for a shift from reactive to proactive disaster risk management.

She announced the launch of NEMA’s 2025–2029 Strategy Plan and the 2025–2030 National Disaster Risk Reduction Strategy, focusing on risk-informed development and innovative financing models like catastrophe bonds and climate funds.

Umar also highlighted NEMA’s collaboration on a National Risk Monitoring and Information Platform for early warning and risk-informed investments, urging mainstreaming resilience across sectors like agriculture, health, and infrastructure.

The event was attended by Vice President Kashim Shettima, Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal, lawmakers, and international partners.
