Enugu Senator, Kelvin Chukwu Officially Dumps LP, Defects to APC

Senator Kelvin Chukwu, representing Enugu East Senatorial District, has formally defected from the Labour Party (LP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), a move that underscores the ruling party's expanding influence in the opposition-strong South-East ahead of the 2027 elections.

Chukwu's resignation letter was read on the Senate floor during Wednesday's plenary by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, who welcomed him into the APC fold.

In the letter, the senator cited the LP's "shattered and unfocused" state, blaming prolonged internal crises and factionalization for hindering his ability to serve constituents effectively.

He had first hinted at the switch during a September 25 town hall in Amuri Community, Nkanu West, assuring supporters of uninterrupted representation.

The defection, which leaves Senator Okey Ezea as Enugu's lone LP senator, follows similar exits by state lawmakers like Hon. Chimaobi Sam Atu and Sunday Umehia, eroding LP's 2023 gains in the state.

Former APC Enugu chairman Ben Nwoye hailed it as a "wise decision" benefiting Chukwu and his district.

LP's national leadership is yet to respond publicly, but the move amplifies concerns over the party's post-2023 stability amid leadership battles.
