Cross River Senator Agom Jarigbe Defects from PDP to APC

Senator Agom Jarigbe, representing the Cross River North Senatorial District, has officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), marking another high-profile shift in Nigeria’s political landscape.

The announcement came on Wednesday evening after Jarigbe, alongside Senator Kaila Samaila Dahuwa of Bauchi North—who also recently switched parties—was led by Senate President Godswill Akpabio to meet President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

Speaking to journalists following the closed-door meeting, Jarigbe explained his decision: “I joined the APC because the President is really doing well, and I want to come in and support him in delivering the dividends of democracy to our people.”

He emphasized his commitment to backing Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope Agenda,” particularly in areas of economic reform and revenue generation, which he credited with turning around the nation’s fortunes.

The defection, formalized earlier on the Senate floor, followed weeks of consultations with APC leaders at both national and state levels.

Jarigbe’s move strengthens the APC’s hold in the upper chamber, where it already enjoys a majority, and adds to a wave of opposition figures crossing over amid internal PDP crises.

Supporters hailed it as a strategic alignment with policies promoting national stability, while PDP stakeholders in Cross River expressed dismay, viewing it as a significant blow to the opposition’s foothold in the state.

Akpabio described the newcomers as “Mr. President’s children” and patriots drawn by Tinubu’s transformative policies, underscoring the growing realignments ahead of the 2027 elections.

Both senators pledged full legislative backing to advance key government initiatives during their meeting with the president.
