Court Denies Tukur Mamu’s Bail, Orders Medical Care, Family Access

A Federal High Court in Abuja has rejected a fresh bail application by alleged terrorist negotiator Tukur Mohammed Mamu, marking the third denial since his arraignment on March 21, 2023.

Justice Mohammed Umar, delivering the ruling on Wednesday, acknowledged Mamu’s health concerns but ordered the Department of State Services (DSS) to transfer him to a suitable health facility for proper medical attention rather than granting his release.

Justice Umar noted that the prosecution has demonstrated diligence in handling the case, a key factor in denying bail.

“Where the prosecution is diligent, bail cannot be granted,” he stated, directing Mamu’s defense counsel to select an appropriate medical facility for his treatment.

The court also mandated the DSS to allow Mamu access to his family members.Mamu faces a 10-count charge related to terrorism financing, stemming from his arrest on September 7, 2022, by Egyptian authorities at Cairo International Airport on suspicion of funding Boko Haram activities.

He is accused of negotiating ransom payments with families of hostages from the March 2022 Abuja-Kaduna train attack, bypassing the Federal Government’s Chief of Defense Staff Committee for personal gain. Mamu allegedly collected and delivered ransoms to the terrorists on behalf of the families.

The court’s decision underscores the ongoing legal battle surrounding Mamu’s role in the high-profile case, with the prosecution maintaining its commitment to a thorough trial process while ensuring the defendant’s health and family access are addressed.
