Dozens of fighters from the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) were killed in renewed clashes with the rival Boko Haram faction, Jama’atu Ahlis Sunna Lidda’awati wal-Jihad (JAS), after a fragile reconciliation agreement broke down in the Lake Chad region.
Security sources told Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency expert, that the latest violence erupted on October 26 when JAS fighters loyal to commander Mohammed Hassan launched a coordinated assault on an ISWAP stronghold in Mangari, Kukawa Local Government Area of Borno State.
The attack, executed using multiple watercraft between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m., overwhelmed ISWAP defenses, resulting in heavy casualties and the seizure of weapons and supplies.
JAS forces advanced from Toumbun Gini toward Abujan Ruwa. The offensive followed the September killing of Abu Abass, a senior JAS tax collector, by ISWAP- an act that enraged the Bakoura-led faction and triggered a cycle of reprisals.
This marks a collapse of a short-lived non-aggression pact. Earlier on October 8, JAS had struck ISWAP positions in Toumbun Mairi.Sources say ISWAP is now mobilizing for counterattacks, with commanders ordered to eliminate JAS members.
The rivalry, intensified since Abubakar Shekau’s death in 2021, often spills into civilian areas, endangering local communities.
Troops under Operation Hadin Kai have been placed on high alert to prevent escalation and protect settlements.
