WAEC Embraces Full Computer-Based Testing for WASSCE, Ending 73 Years of Paper

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) in Nigeria has announced that the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) will transition entirely to Computer-Based Testing (CBT), phasing out the traditional paper-and-pen format after 73 years.

The move, hailed as a transformative step, aims to curb examination malpractice, enhance result integrity, and align Nigeria’s education system with global technological standards.

The decision, announced by the Ministry of Education in alignment with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, underscores a commitment to modernizing education and preparing students for a digital, knowledge-driven future.

“This reform will not only safeguard the credibility of WASSCE certificates but also equip Nigerian students with the technological skills needed to compete globally,” said Education Minister Dr. Tunji Alausa during a press briefing in Abuja.

The transition follows successful pilot CBT programs conducted by WAEC in select centers since 2023, particularly for private candidates.
