Tobi Amusan Slams Nigerian Govt Over Substandard Kits Ahead of 2025 World Championships

With hours to go before the 2025 World Athletics Championships kick off in Tokyo, Japan, Nigeria’s former world champion and women’s 100m hurdles record holder, Tobi Amusan, has publicly criticized the Nigerian government for providing inadequate kits to athletes representing the country.

In a scathing Snapchat video, Amusan decried the unprofessionalism and lack of coordination within the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), highlighting the substandard support given to the nation’s contingent.

Amusan, a prominent figure in global athletics, expressed frustration over the quality of the kits, noting that while other countries equip their athletes with well-packed suitcases, Nigeria hands out kits in flimsy nylon bags with minimal contents.

“This country will steadily embarrass you. Una come say make people no switch allegiance? Una never ready. No singlets. Nothing!” she vented, questioning why athletes should remain loyal to Nigeria under such conditions.

She also compared Nigeria’s preparations unfavorably to Jamaica’s, acknowledging that while Jamaican authorities face similar challenges, their provisions are far superior.

The outburst shows ongoing concerns about Nigeria’s sports administration, which has faced criticism for poor funding and logistical failures despite athletes’ global successes.

As Amusan prepares to compete, her remarks have sparked reactions on social media, with fans  calling for urgent reforms to support Nigeria’s athletes.

The AFN and Ministry of Sports is yet to respond to the allegations, leaving the focus on whether these issues will impact Team Nigeria’s performance at the championships.
