Sokoto Govt Rolls Out Monthly Allowances for Imams, Deputies, Mu’azzins

The Sokoto State Government has announced the introduction of monthly allowances for Imams, their deputies, and Mu’azzins across all mosques in the state, coupled with fresh allocations to Jumu’at mosques.

This initiative, unveiled on September 1, 2025, aims to enhance the welfare of Islamic religious leaders and support mosque operations amid economic challenges.

Governor Ahmed Aliyu Sokoto, speaking during a state executive council meeting, described the move as a fulfillment of the administration's commitment to religious harmony and community development.

"Our Imams and Mu’azzins play a pivotal role in guiding our people spiritually and socially. Providing them with financial support ensures they can focus on their duties without undue hardship," the governor stated, according to a government press release.

Details of the program include a monthly stipend of ₦50,000 for each Imam, ₦30,000 for deputies, and ₦20,000 for Mu’azzins, payable to over 5,000 beneficiaries statewide.

Additionally, Jumu’at mosques will receive quarterly allocations of ₦100,000 for maintenance and community activities.

The funding, sourced from the state’s 2025 budget, is expected to commence disbursements in October 2025.

This development follows similar welfare packages introduced by the state in 2024, including salary increments for traditional rulers and subsidies for pilgrims.

Officials noted that the allowances address rising living costs, with inflation hovering at 34.2% nationally.

Religious leaders have welcomed the initiative, with the Sokoto State Council of Ulama praising it as a "timely intervention" that strengthens faith-based institutions.

The program is part of broader efforts under Governor Aliyu's administration to promote inclusive governance in the predominantly Muslim northern state, which has a population of over 5 million.
