Pro-Biafra Agitator Simon Ekpa Sentenced to Six Years in Finland for Terrorism Offenses

A Finnish court sentenced Simon Ekpa, a Nigerian-born Finnish citizen and self-proclaimed leader of the Biafra Republic Government in Exile, to six years in prison for terrorism-related crimes and financial offenses.

The Päijät-Häme District Court in Lahti convicted the 40-year-old for inciting violence in Nigeria via social media, particularly X, between 2021 and 2024.

Ekpa was found guilty of organizing armed groups, supplying weapons, and encouraging attacks on Nigerian authorities and civilians to advance Biafran separatism.

Additional charges included aggravated tax fraud and violating Finland’s Lawyers Act.

Arrested in November 2024, Ekpa denied the charges, but the court upheld the prosecution’s evidence, including his online propaganda.

Nigeria, which had sought his extradition, praised the verdict as a blow to regional unrest.

The ruling highlights global efforts to combat digital incitement, though Ekpa’s supporters claim it’s politically driven. He remains in custody with no immediate appeal details.
