The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has called on the Senate to allow Kogi Central Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan to resume her duties following the expiration of her six-month suspension.
NBA President Afam Osigwe, SAN, speaking on Wednesday, September 17, 2025, argued that the ongoing legal challenge to her suspension should not prevent her return, as the suspension period ended on September 6, 2025.
Osigwe emphasized, “The suspension was for six months. The pending court case does not change the fact that the suspension has lapsed. The Senate cannot use the appeal to deny her seat, leaving her constituents unrepresented. They should act honorably and reinstate her while the court resolves the legality of the suspension.”
Akpoti-Uduaghan was suspended on March 6, 2025, for violating Senate rules by refusing to vacate her assigned seat during plenary sessions, resulting in the loss of her salary, aides, and office privileges.
She challenged the suspension in the Federal High Court and appealed Justice Binta Nyako’s ruling.
However, a letter from Dr. Yahaya Danzaria, acting Clerk to the National Assembly, stated her suspension would continue until the Court of Appeal rules.
The NBA insists that, with the suspension period over, Akpoti-Uduaghan should be allowed to resume her legislative duties pending the court’s final decision.
