Rivers assembly resumes plenary after expiration of emergency rule

The Rivers state house of assembly reconvened for plenary after the emergency rule imposed on the state elapsed on Thursday.

President Bola Tinubu lifted the emergency rule on September 17, with all democratic structures in the state asked to resume duties.

The plenary is being presided by Martins Amaewhule, speaker of the house, at the conference hall located within the legislative quarters.

The conference hall has served as the lawmakers’ temporary chamber since their official chamber at the assembly complex on Moscow Road was torched and later pulled down by the state government.

Ibok-Ete Ibas, who was sole administrator of the state, could not complete the reconstruction of the assembly complex.

On March 18, Tinubu declared emergency rule in the oil-rich state in the wake of a prolonged political crisis arising from the rift between Fubara and Nyesom Wike, minister of the federal capital territory (FCT).

Fubara, governor of Rivers; Ngozi Nma Odu, his deputy; and the legislators, were suspended for an initial period of six months by the president.
