Renowned journalist Reuben Abati has sharply criticized Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike, accusing him of lacking the moral authority to speak recklessly about prominent figures like Peter Obi, former President Goodluck Jonathan, and former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai.
In a fiery statement on September 2, 2025, Abati took a swipe at Wike, saying, “Wike is not in a position to talk about character. In fact, he should question his own character.”
Abati’s remarks, aired during a segment on Arise TV, comes in response to Wike’s recent comments targeting Obi, Jonathan, and El-Rufai, which have sparked widespread controversy.
Abati lambasted the media for amplifying Wike’s remarks, alleging that some outlets are complicit in giving him a platform in exchange for financial incentives.
“I blame the media. Yesterday, he was talking about Peter Obi, Jonathan, and El-Rufai. The media are the ones going to interview him, and they are the ones collecting money,” Abati stated.
The veteran journalist urged Wike to reflect on his own conduct before criticizing others, arguing that his attacks lack intelligence and credibility.
“Wike doesn’t have the moral ground to speak recklessly and unintelligently about these individuals,” Abati added, calling for more responsible discourse in Nigerian politics.
The controversy follows Wike’s recent statements during a media chat, which have drawn mixed reactions on social media and among political analysts.
As a key figure in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and a prominent ally of the current administration, Wike’s remarks have intensified debates about political decorum and media ethics.
Abati's statement:
‘’Wike is saying that PDP will be destroyed if Peter Obi comes back to PDP because Peter Obi doesn't have the character having condemned PDP as a rotten party to come back to the PDP.
"Wike is not in a position to talk about character. He is not the one to talk about character. If he wants to talk about character, he should question his own character. I do not know why people have problems with basic intelligence and decorum. He goes on television to say Peter Obi doesn't have character.
"Peter Obi left PDP and went to Labour party, now he is in ADC. In fact, it is Wike himself that destroyed the party.
"He was talking about Peter Obi, Goodkluck Jonathan, Nasir El-Rufai. What gives him that moral high ground to talk recklessly and unintelligently' he said.
