A reconciliation meeting between the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) and Dangote Petroleum Refinery management, held at the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, concluded without resolution on Monday, September 29, 2025.
The nine-hour session, starting at 4 p.m., aimed to address the recent dismissal of over 800 workers, which PENGASSAN has labeled "illegal and unconstitutional."
The union alleges the layoffs were targeted at members due to their affiliation, violating International Labour Organisation conventions. Dangote Refinery's management, however, described the dismissals as part of a "strategic reorganization" to enhance operational efficiency and address safety concerns, denying any discriminatory intent.
Following the stalemate, PENGASSAN intensified its response, barricading the headquarters of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), and the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) in Abuja.
The union vowed to continue industrial action until their demands are met.The Minister of Labour and Employment, Mohammed Dingyadi, announced that talks would resume at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, September 30, 2025, to seek a resolution.
The ongoing dispute threatens to disrupt operations at Dangote Refinery, a key player in Nigeria’s push for energy self-sufficiency.
