Ogun State Govt Issues Flood Alert as Heavy Rainfall Looms

The Ogun State Government has issued a mid-term flood alert, urging residents in flood-prone areas to prepare for potential flooding between September and November 2025.

The warning, announced on March 20, follows the Seasonal Rainfall Prediction (SRP) from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET) and the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA).

The state successfully managed the first phase of flooding from March to July through proactive measures, including clearing drainage channels, public awareness campaigns, and enforcing environmental regulations.

The government praised residents for their cooperation in keeping waterways clear of refuse and avoiding trading on drainage paths.

However, authorities have identified mid-September to November as a critical period, with September expected to see the highest rainfall at approximately 204mm, followed by 190mm in October, before subsiding to 93mm in November.

Flood-prone areas include coastal and riverine communities such as Iwopin, Ifaara, Oni, Makun, Ebute-Imobi, Tungeji Island, and settlements near the Ogun River, including Isheri, Warewa, Akute, and Abeokuta.

Communities along the ILO and Iju Rivers are also at risk. The government noted that flooding risks could be exacerbated by tidal variations and controlled water releases from the Oyan Dam, where water levels have reached 58.47 meters above mean sea level.

The State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) is on red alert for potential evacuation operations, while the Ministry of Environment is collaborating with the Ogun-Osun River Basin Development Authority to manage dam releases.

Residents in vulnerable areas have been advised to relocate to safer zones. Fish farmers in low-lying areas, including Eriwe, Yemule, Ilase, and Ayegbami, were urged to harvest their stock immediately to avoid losses.

Households relying on wells and boreholes were also warned of potential water contamination.

Commissioner for Environment, Hon. Ola Oresanya, reassured residents of the government’s commitment to their safety.

“We remain dedicated to averting the menace of flooding in Ogun State and will continue to take proactive steps to safeguard our people. We appeal for continued cooperation from residents, as addressing the challenge requires joint responsibility,” he said.
