Nigeria Condemns Israeli Airstrike on Hamas Leaders in Qatar, Warns of Regional Instability

The Federal Government of Nigeria has voiced deep concern over reports of an Israeli airstrike in Doha, Qatar, targeting senior Hamas leaders earlier this week, warning that the attack threatens regional stability and violates international law.

The statement, issued by Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Kimiebi Ebienfa on Thursday, September 11, 2025, underscored Nigeria’s commitment to respecting national sovereignty and promoting peaceful dialogue.

“This airstrike raises serious concerns about the stability of the Middle East and the prospects for diplomatic resolutions to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict,” Ebienfa stated.

Nigeria praised Qatar’s pivotal role as a mediator in peace negotiations and urged all parties to exercise restraint to prevent further escalation.

“Violence only deepens divisions and prolongs suffering. We call for a renewed focus on dialogue to achieve lasting peace,” the statement added.

The government extended condolences to the victims of the attack and reaffirmed its dedication to supporting international efforts, including through the United Nations, to de-escalate tensions and uphold the rule of law in the region.

Nigeria’s stance comes amid heightened tensions in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, which intensified in October 2023 following Hamas’s surprise attack on southern Israel, resulting in over 1,200 deaths and the capture of more than 200 hostages.

Israel’s subsequent military operations in Gaza have led to over 62,000 deaths, according to Gaza’s health ministry, causing widespread destruction and a deepening humanitarian crisis.

Qatar, a key mediator hosting Hamas’s political leadership in Doha, has been instrumental in facilitating negotiations.
