The Lagos State Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources has announced an immediate suspension of all reclamation projects across the state, including those with or without Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) approvals and drainage clearances.
The directive, issued by Commissioner Tokunbo Wahab, targets widespread reclamation activities on wetlands, floodplains, and lagoons in areas such as Parkview, Banana Island, Osborne, Ikoyi, Victoria Island Extension, Lekki, Ajah, Oworonshoki, Lagos Mainland, Ikorodu, Ojo, and Badagry.
The ministry expressed concern over the environmental and social risks posed by these projects, including increased flooding, coastal erosion, disruption of livelihoods (particularly fishing), loss of wetlands and biodiversity, reduced lagoon capacity, and impaired water quality.
The statement highlighted that many projects lack the required EIA approvals and drainage clearances, exacerbating the state’s vulnerability due to its low-lying topography and fragile ecosystem.
All reclamation projects, whether approved or ongoing, must now undergo proper documentation and monitoring. New and continuing projects are required to complete the EIA process and obtain approval letters and drainage clearances from the ministry.
Non-compliance within seven days of the announcement will result in the decommissioning of reclaimed sites, including excavation and removal of fill, restoration of blocked water channels, and the arrest and prosecution of violators.
Commissioner Wahab emphasized the state’s firm stance, stating, “Enough is enough!” as the government moves to protect Lagos’ environment and the well-being of its residents.
