Governor Babagana Umara Zulum on Friday commissioned a 48-classroom High Islamic College in Baga, Kukawa LGA, aimed at transforming education for almajirai by blending formal academics, Islamic studies, and vocational training.
The initiative seeks to curb illiteracy and insecurity in Borno State.Speaking at the inauguration, Zulum emphasized integrating subjects like Mathematics and English to align the non-formal system with mainstream education.
“This will prepare students for JAMB and secure their path to tertiary institutions,” he said.
The school, one of 20 such facilities established under his leadership, will provide daily meals to boost student retention.Engr.
Lawan Abba Wakilbe, Commissioner for Education, Science, Technology, and Innovation, announced that 23 local teachers have been hired, with free uniforms, books, and materials distributed to students.
Zulum was joined by lawmakers, commissioners, and senior officials at the event.In a separate visit, Zulum inspected the near-complete Baga-Chad Republic Water Clearance Project, designed to remove silt and invasive plants from river channels connecting Baga to Lake Chad.
“This project could create millions of jobs, revitalizing agriculture, fishing, and trade,” Zulum stated, praising the federal government, military, and security agencies for their support.
The water clearance effort is poised to transform socio-economic prospects in the region, marking a significant step toward restoring livelihoods in Borno’s Lake Chad Basin communities.
