Floods Ravage Zaria, Displace 470 Children, Destroy 270 Homes

Torrential rains on Thursday and Friday triggered catastrophic flooding in Zaria, Kaduna State, displacing over 470 children and demolishing more than 270 households across multiple communities.

A joint assessment team, comprising the Nigerian Red Cross Society, National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Kaduna State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), and local officials, surveyed the devastation.

Led by Zaria Local Government Chairman, Alhaji Jamil Ahmad Muhammad Jaga, the team visited severely affected areas, including Kofar Kuyanbana, Gangaren Mobil, Bayan Cinema in Tudun Wada Ward, and Magume, Bako Zuntu, and Kamacha in Tukur Tukur Ward.

The deluge swept away food supplies, clothing, electronics, and other essentials, leaving hundreds of families in distress. Despite the extensive damage, officials reported no fatalities, calling it a miracle given the disaster’s magnitude.

The Nigerian Red Cross Society, Zaria Division, has begun distributing relief materials but warned of escalating hardship without urgent support.

The organization appealed to government bodies, philanthropists, and NGOs for immediate aid to assist displaced families.

Authorities pledged ongoing assessments and additional relief efforts to mitigate the crisis’s impact on affected communities.
