FG Scraps 5% Telecom Excise Tax, Easing Costs for Nigeria’s Mobile Users

The Federal Government has eliminated the 5% excise tax on telecommunications services in Nigeria, a decision set to alleviate financial burdens for millions of mobile subscribers.

Initially introduced under the Muhammadu Buhari administration, the tax on voice calls and data services faced strong opposition from industry stakeholders and consumer groups.

Aminu Maida, Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), announced that President Tinubu ordered the tax’s removal during deliberations on the newly passed Finance Act.

This move is expected to provide relief to over 171 million active telecom users nationwide, who have been grappling with a 50% tariff hike earlier this year.
