The Federal Government has declared tuition-free education in all Federal Technical Colleges (FTCs) nationwide, covering a comprehensive range of approved charges.
The initiative, announced late Wednesday, includes tuition, boarding fees, uniforms, textbooks, exercise books, prospectuses, identity cards, stationery, clubs and societies, medical services, vocational programs, utilities, security, website/e-result access, Skool Media, extra lessons, and insurance.
The policy aligns with the government’s free-education agenda and aims to empower FTCs to produce skilled graduates who will drive Nigeria’s national transformation.
According to a statement by Folasade Boriowo, Director of Press and Public Relations at the Federal Ministry of Education, the initiative reflects President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritizes Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) to foster human capital development.
“No Nigerian child should be denied access to technical education due to financial barriers,” said Dr. Tunji Alausa, Minister of Education, in the statement.
“By investing in education today, we are building a stronger, self-reliant Nigeria.”
Dr. Alausa warned that no principal or administrator is permitted to demand unauthorised payments from parents or guardians, emphasizing that strict monitoring mechanisms are in place to address violations swiftly.
He directed that circulars reinforcing the policy be sent to all FTCs and parents to ensure clarity and compliance. While the government will cover tuition and core expenses, students, as boarders, are expected to provide personal items, including Sunday/Jumat attire, bathroom slippers, blankets, bedsheets, pillowcases, towels, underwear, one ream of A4 paper (80 grams) for registration, and other personal cleaning materials.
The Ministry urged parents to report any illegal demands for fees through its dedicated channels: Hotline: 08036576733, 08036373796; Email: tse@education.gov.ng.
“We are committed to ensuring transparency and accountability in the implementation of this policy,” Boriowo added.
The announcement has been met with optimism by stakeholders. Mrs. Chidinma Okeke, a parent in Lagos, expressed relief, stating,
“This will ease the burden on families like mine. Technical education is key to our children’s future, and I’m glad the government is making it free.”
The Ministry emphasized that the initiative is designed to equip Nigerian youth with employable skills, strengthening national progress and global competitiveness.
With robust monitoring in place, the government aims to ensure that FTCs remain true to their mandate of producing skilled graduates for a transformative Nigeria.
