FG Begs PENGASSAN to Suspend Strike

The Federal Government has appealed to the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) to call off its planned strike against the Dangote Group, citing potential harm to Nigeria’s recovering economy.

Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, made the plea on behalf of the government, urging PENGASSAN to prioritize national interest and resolve disputes amicably.

The appeal came during an inspection of Sections One and Two of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway on September 29, 2025, as stated by Umahi’s Special Adviser on Media, Orji Uchenna Orji.

Accompanied by public affairs analyst Segun Sowunmi, Surveyor-General Adeyemi Adebomehin, Director of Highway Bridges and Design Engr. Musa Saidu, Federal Controller of Works Engr. Kesha, and civil society groups, Umahi praised Hitech Construction Company Ltd for the quality and progress of the highway project.

He highlighted Hitech’s innovative solutions, including plans for Nigeria’s largest flyovers to address traffic conflicts. Umahi dismissed claims by some content creators that unprotected road shoulders indicated construction failure, attributing such reports to ignorance or mischief.

Addressing a land dispute, Umahi challenged Stella Okengwu of Winhome, who claimed a N50 million investment loss on land revoked for the highway, to provide evidence of her $250 million investment and development approvals.

He noted that the Lagos State government had transferred the land’s right of way to the federal government and offered Okengwu compensation for a minor structure.

Civil society groups present also condemned Okengwu’s claims as false.Segun Sowunmi, spokesperson for the 2019 Atiku presidential campaign, lauded Hitech’s work as a masterpiece and praised President Tinubu’s vision for transformative infrastructure.

He urged Nigerians to support such projects beyond political divides, emphasizing their role in shaping Nigeria’s economic future.

Other speakers, including Hitech’s Managing Director Dany Abboud, the Director of Highway Bridges, and the Federal Controller of Works, provided insights into the project’s technical progress.
