EFCC Declares Former Abia Commissioner, Local Resident Wanted for Alleged Fraud

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has issued a wanted notice for Christopher Enweremadu, a former Abia State commissioner, and Fortune Ozoemela, an Abia resident, over allegations of criminal conspiracy, theft, diversion of public funds, and money laundering.

The announcement was made by EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale on the commission’s website on September 3, 2025.Enweremadu, who served as commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters under former Governor Okezie Ikpeazu, was last known to be at the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs in Umuahia.

Ozoemela, 40, hails from Amakama Olokoro, Umuahia, with his last known address at 122 Ozoemila’s Compound.

The EFCC has appealed to the public for information on their whereabouts, directing tips to its offices in Ibadan, Uyo, Sokoto, Maiduguri, Benin, Makurdi, Kaduna, Ilorin, Enugu, Kano, Lagos, Gombe, Port Harcourt, or Abuja.

While specific details of Enweremadu’s alleged transactions were not disclosed, he is linked to an investigation into the mismanagement of funds allocated to Abia’s 17 local government councils.

In December 2024, a Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja ordered a probe into the councils’ allocations from 2019 to 2023, mandating the EFCC to submit findings.

The court also seized the international passports of Enweremadu, former aide Erondu Uchenna Erondu, and Joy Nwanju, a permanent secretary in the ministry.

The court’s ruling stemmed from an activist’s ex parte application alleging the diversion of billions of naira meant for the councils under the officials’ oversight.
