Ebonyi State Governor Bans House, Land Agents from 2026, to Curb Soaring Rents

Ebonyi State Governor, Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru has announced a complete ban on house and land agents operating in Ebonyi State, effective January 1, 2026.

The decision, revealed during a public address on September 3, 2025, aims to eliminate exploitative practices by agents, who have been reported to charge exorbitant fees, sometimes as high as ₦500,000, for merely facilitating property viewings.

Governor Nwifuru stated that the ban is part of a broader strategy to make housing more affordable for residents.

“We have observed that agents, who often do not own the properties, inflate rents and impose outrageous charges, making life difficult for our people,” he said.

The new policy will mandate direct transactions between property owners and tenants, with the government introducing a regulated system to ensure transparency and fairness.

The Ebonyi State government has promised to roll out guidelines before the ban takes effect, including a platform to connect landlords and tenants seamlessly.

This reform is expected to reshape the state’s real estate landscape, prioritizing affordability and accountability.
