The Ebonyi State Government, through the Better Health for Rural Women, Children and Internally Displaced Persons (BERWO) Foundation led by Governor’s wife Uzoamaka Nwifuru, has provided 26 widows with three-bedroom bungalows under its Widows’ Housing Project.
The initiative, targeting two widows in each of the state’s 13 Local Government Areas (LGAs), aims to uplift vulnerable women by offering them secure and dignified homes.
The project was inaugurated on Saturday in Ishielu and Ohaukwu LGAs, with plans to extend ceremonies to other councils soon.
During the event, beneficiaries Josephine Ekoyo from Ndiegu Azu Echara in Ikwo LGA and Cecilia Ogbuinya from Amagu Onicha village in Abakaliki LGA expressed profound gratitude.
Ekoyo, who received keys to her new home, shared that she had lived in a shanty for years after her previous house collapsed, relying on friends and family for a makeshift rebuild.
“Today, my life has changed. I thank Mrs. Nwifuru and the state government for their unconditional love,” she told journalists.Ogbuinya, another recipient who had endured the loss of six children while living in a shelter, could barely contain her joy.
“This house is a miracle. Mrs. Nwifuru is rebuilding the lives of women like me,” she said, praising the governor’s wife for her commitment to vulnerable women.
Speaking at the inauguration, Mrs. Nwifuru described the project as a “dream come true” and a core achievement of BERWO’s mission to restore hope and security for widows.
“I am happy this objective to uplift the lives of widows in society has been achieved,” she said, reaffirming her dedication to supporting the underprivileged.
Commissioner for Housing Francis Ori noted that each of the 26 three-bedroom bungalows was strategically allocated to the most vulnerable widows across the 13 LGAs.
He commended Mrs. Nwifuru’s people-centered vision for addressing the plight of the downtrodden.
Similarly, Ikwo Council Chairman Sunday Nwankwo and Commissioner for Education Donatus Ilang hailed the initiative as a transformative step toward improving living standards for marginalized groups.
