The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Prof. Nentawe Goshwe Yilwatda, accompanied by members of the APC National Working Committee (NWC), state governors, and federal legislators, paid a significant visit to Plateau State on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, to strengthen party unity and engage with key stakeholders.
The delegation met with the Plateau State Traditional Council, led by the Gbong Gwom Jos, His Royal Majesty Da Jacob Gyang Buba, as well as leaders from the Christian and Muslim communities, underscoring the party’s commitment to inclusive leadership and grassroots engagement.
The visit, described as a homecoming for Yilwatda, a Plateau native, followed his appointment as APC National Chairman on July 24, 2025, succeeding Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje.
Speaking at the palace of the Gbong Gwom Jos, Yilwatda highlighted Plateau’s historical role in producing national leaders during critical times, citing his appointment as a testament to the state’s stabilizing influence in Nigerian politics.
“When there’s a need for leadership at the national level, Plateau is always a junction,” he said, referencing the legacy of former Governor Solomon Lar, who led the PDP in 1998.
Yilwatda sought the prayers and blessings of the traditional council, stating, “When I contested for governorship, you prayed for me. That blessing has taken me this far, and I seek even greater support to lead our party to success.”
The delegation, which included Governors Hope Uzodinma of Imo, Ahmed Aliyu of Sokoto, Usman Ododo of Kogi, and Hyacinth Alia of Benue, conveyed President Bola Tinubu’s appreciation for Plateau’s contributions to national leadership.
Governor Uzodinma, Chairman of the Progressive Governors’ Forum, emphasized that President Tinubu personally directed the governors to accompany Yilwatda to demonstrate the significance of the moment.
“The President asked me to thank the traditional council for producing a leader like Prof. Nentawe, who we believe will strengthen the APC and Nigeria,” Uzodinma said.
The Gbong Gwom Jos, in his remarks, pledged the council’s support for Yilwatda’s leadership while urging political leaders to prioritize Nigeria’s stability amid economic and security challenges.
“We know things are difficult—security, economy—all are under pressure. We appeal to you and the President to lead with the fear of God and restore peace,” he stated.
The delegation also visited the Plateau Central Mosque and several Christian centers, engaging with religious leaders to foster interfaith harmony and rally support for the APC’s agenda.
Yilwatda reiterated his commitment to transparent and inclusive leadership, promising to broaden the party’s appeal and position it for victory in the 2027 elections.
He urged stakeholders to promote President Tinubu’s economic initiatives, including funding for the Bank of Industry to enhance food sufficiency and plans to deliver over 1.5 million housing units nationwide.
The visit follows earlier solidarity gestures from Plateau leaders, including a delegation led by Senator Simon Lalong, former Minister Pauline Tallen, and State Party Chairman Rufus Bature on July 31, 2025, and a similar visit by the Plateau State House of Assembly on July 29, 2025.
These engagements reflect strong local support for Yilwatda, whose appointment is seen as a historic milestone for Plateau, marking the first time since 1999 that the state has produced a national chairman of a ruling party.
