President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the appointment of Engr. Dr. Abdullahi Garba Ramat as the new Director General and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), marking a significant step toward revitalizing Nigeria’s power sector.
The announcement, made on August 6, 2025, underscores the administration’s commitment to driving innovation and regulatory reform in the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI).At 39, Engr.
Ramat brings a wealth of experience, with over 15 years in Nigeria’s energy landscape, specializing in regulatory governance, power sector transformation, and technology integration.
A licensed electrical engineer, he holds a PhD in Strategic Management from Lincoln University, a Master’s in Electronics and Telecommunications Engineering from Jodhpur National University, India, and a B.Eng in Electrical Engineering from Bayero University, Kano.
His notable achievements include deploying smart grid and IoT solutions that reduced infrastructure costs by 40% and pioneering blockchain-based e-governance in Kano, tripling local government revenue.
Previously, Ramat served as the Kano State Representative on the NERC Consumer Forum (2019–2020) and has led institutional reforms across public and private sectors.
As the founder and CEO of AG Ramat Global Link and AG Ramat Global Apex, he has driven ventures in engineering consulting and technology services.
His leadership has earned him international recognition, including being named one of the “50 Most Influential Young African Leaders” by the Pan African Youth Leadership Foundation in 2022.
The appointment signals a generational shift at NERC, with expectations that Ramat’s expertise will enhance regulatory enforcement, consumer protection, and investor confidence.
“This is a forward-looking move to inject youthful energy and strategic reforms into the nation’s electricity sector,” a presidency statement noted.
