The U.S. State Department has canceled over 6,000 international student visas due to violations of U.S. law and overstays, according to a statement provided to the BBC on August 19, 2025.
The revocations, part of the Trump administration’s ongoing immigration crackdown, primarily involve offenses such as assault, driving under the influence (DUI), burglary, and “support for terrorism.”
Approximately 4,000 visas were revoked for legal violations, with 200–300 others canceled under Section 3B of the Immigration and Nationality Act, which broadly defines “terrorist activity” as acts endangering human life or breaching U.S. law.
While the State Department did not clarify “support for terrorism,” the Trump administration has scrutinized students involved in pro-Palestine protests, alleging antisemitic behavior.
Earlier in 2025, the administration paused visa appointment scheduling for international students, resuming in June with stricter measures.
Applicants are now required to disclose social media accounts for enhanced vetting, with officers instructed to screen for hostility toward U.S. citizens, culture, government, or founding principles, as well as support for designated foreign terrorists or antisemitic acts.
The move has sparked concerns among international students, with critics arguing the broad definitions and social media screenings may unfairly target specific groups, particularly those engaged in political expression.
The State Department defends the policy as essential for national security, emphasizing ongoing efforts to align visa processes with stricter immigration standards.
