President Bola Tinubu has pledged to ramp up local production of arms and ammunition to bolster Nigeria’s security framework in its ongoing battle against insurgency, banditry, and other threats.
Speaking at the graduation ceremony of Course 33 of the National Defence College (NDC) in Abuja on August 23, 2025, Tinubu, represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, emphasized that strengthening indigenous manufacturing is critical to reducing reliance on foreign suppliers and enhancing the nation’s capacity to combat insecurity.
“The foundation of a secure and prosperous Nigeria lies in our ability to produce our own military hardware,” Tinubu said, highlighting the economic and strategic benefits of self-reliance.
He commended the NDC’s research excellence, specifically citing their Presidential Treaties on Harnessing Indigenous Manufacturing for Enhanced National Security and Development: Strategic Options for Nigeria by 2040.
“I have directed stakeholders to study these recommendations and implement viable strategies,” he added.
The President also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening institutions, noting their role in upholding the rule of law, ensuring accountability, and delivering services.
He described the NDC as a cornerstone of human capital development, preparing graduates from the Nigerian Army, Navy, Police, and allied nations to tackle complex security challenges.
“You are stepping into a volatile world, but you are equipped to lead with vision and courage,” Tinubu told the Course 33 graduates.
Tinubu reiterated plans to complete the NDC’s permanent site in Piwoyi, envisioning its evolution into a Defence Postgraduate University.
“We are committed to upgrading facilities to ensure the College continues to train leaders for Nigeria and allied nations,” he said, directing the Commandant to collaborate with the Minister of Defence on a clear strategy.
The push for local arms production aligns with recent efforts by the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON), which signed a joint venture with SP Offshore Nigeria Limited to advance domestic manufacturing.
Commandant Rear Admiral J.O. Okosu and Deputy Commandant Major General Kevin Ukandu underscored the training’s focus on addressing banditry, oil theft, and other security issues, equipping graduates for high-level policy and command roles.
Tinubu’s directive signals a broader strategy to integrate local solutions into Nigeria’s fight against insurgency, aiming for sustainable security and development.
