Datti Baba-Ahmed, the 2023 Labour Party (LP) vice-presidential candidate, has called for the appointment of a credible chairman for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to replace outgoing Chairman Mahmood Yakubu.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on August 22, 2025, Baba-Ahmed criticized Yakubu’s tenure, alleging that electoral fraud under his leadership has fueled Nigeria’s insecurity and socio-economic challenges.
“Nigeria doesn’t need an election-rigger to lead INEC. We need someone with integrity to restore trust in our electoral process,” Baba-Ahmed stated, linking flawed elections to broader national instability.
He argued that a transparent electoral system is critical for addressing issues like poverty and unrest, which he claims are exacerbated by manipulated polls.
Baba-Ahmed, who ran alongside Peter Obi in the 2023 election, also addressed his political future, reaffirming his commitment to the Labour Party and Obi for the 2027 presidential race.
He dismissed the African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition, which includes Atiku Abubakar and others, as a deceptive effort lacking the vision to rescue Nigeria.
“I’m with Peter Obi until he decides otherwise. The ADC coalition is misleading Nigerians,” he said.
The call for a credible INEC leadership comes amid ongoing debates about electoral reforms, with Baba-Ahmed urging President Bola Tinubu to prioritize appointing an impartial chairman to ensure free and fair elections in 2027.
He emphasized that Nigeria’s democracy depends on an electoral body that respects the will of the people.
As Nigeria approaches the 2027 polls, the demand for a trustworthy INEC leadership remains a focal point in the nation’s political discourse.
