President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Rt. Hon. Comrade Hafiz Kawu, OON, as the new Commissioner (Technical) for the National Pension Commission (PenCom), effective August 7, 2025, as part of his administration’s efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s pension system.
The announcement was made following the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting on August 13, 2025, in Abuja.
Hafiz Kawu, a seasoned politician and public administrator from Kano State, brings a wealth of experience to the role.
Born in 1984, Kawu holds a degree in Chemistry from Bayero University, Kano, and is a member of the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru, Jos.
His previous roles include serving as Special Assistant to former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo from 2015 to 2019 and as a Member of the House of Representatives for Tarauni Federal Constituency from 2019 to 2023 under the All Progressives Congress (APC).
In 2022, he was conferred with the Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) by former President Muhammadu Buhari for his contributions to national development.
The appointment has been widely praised by political leaders and associates, who commend Kawu’s legislative experience and commitment to public sector reform.
In a statement, Kawu expressed gratitude to President Tinubu, pledging to enhance pension administration and ensure the welfare of retirees.
“I am deeply honored by this opportunity and will work tirelessly to strengthen PenCom’s objectives and safeguard the interests of Nigerian retirees,” he said.
Kawu’s appointment aligns with President Tinubu’s broader strategy to reposition key federal agencies for improved efficiency.
Alongside Kawu, the president recently appointed Omolola Oloworaran as PenCom’s Director-General, subject to Senate confirmation, signaling a renewed focus on pension system reforms.
Stakeholders have expressed confidence in Kawu’s ability to drive transparency and accountability in Nigeria’s pension industry, citing his strategic insight and policy expertise.
