Shettima Heads FG Delegation to Zuru Emir’s Funeral in Kebbi

Vice President Kashim Shettima led a Federal Government delegation to Zuru, Kebbi State, on Friday, August 22, 2025, to attend the funeral of the late Emir of Zuru, Major General Muhammadu Sani Sami (rtd), Gomo II, who passed away on August 16, 2025, at the age of 81 in a London hospital after a brief illness.

The solemn ceremony, held at the Zuru Central Mosque following Juma’at prayers, drew thousands of mourners, including prominent figures such as the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II, and Kebbi State Governor, Dr. Nasir Idris.

Shettima, representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, paid tribute to the late emir, describing his death as a monumental loss to Nigeria’s traditional and military institutions.

“It is a sad day for the nation and the people of Kebbi State. The late emir’s legacies will always be remembered for his service to humanity and his role in fostering peace,” Shettima said, extending the president’s condolences to the Zuru Emirate, the Kebbi State government, and the emir’s family.

He prayed for the repose of the emir’s soul, asking, “May Almighty Allah grant him Jannatul Firdaus and his family the fortitude to bear this loss.”

The late emir, a retired Major General who served as Military Governor of Bauchi State from 1984 to 1985, was celebrated for blending military discipline with traditional wisdom.

His eldest son, Sadiq Sani Sami, speaking on behalf of the family, thanked President Tinubu and Shettima for their support, noting his father’s legacy of humility, generosity, and community service.

“Our father taught us hard work and impacted his community and the nation,” Sadiq said.

The funeral, marked by full military honors from the Nigerian Army, saw the emir’s remains interred in a garden at his private residence in Zuru, per his wishes.

Dignitaries in attendance included the Emirs of Gwandu, Argungu, Yauri, Gummi, and Anka, former Niger State Governor Sani Bello, and Minister of State for Humanitarian Affairs, Dr. Yusuf Sununu.

Kebbi State Commissioner for Information and Culture, Alhaji Yakubu Ahmed BK, confirmed that the Jana’iza prayers were led by the Chief Imam of Zuru Central Mosque, Alhaji Suleiman Muhammad-Tanko, after which commercial and social activities in Zuru came to a standstill as residents mourned.

Governor Idris, who accompanied the emir’s remains from London, described the late monarch as a father figure whose wisdom and leadership would be deeply missed.

The Kebbi State Executive Council also held a valedictory session in his honor, praising his contributions to peace and stability.
