Doyin Kachikwu, a 2023 presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has pledged to reinstate fuel subsidies if elected president in 2027.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on August 22, 2025, Kachikwu argued that removing the subsidy, as done by President Bola Tinubu in May 2023, has inflicted severe economic hardship on Nigerians, driving up living costs and inflation.
“The subsidy removal was a mistake that has crippled the masses. If I become president, I’ll bring it back to stabilize fuel prices and ease the burden on ordinary Nigerians,” Kachikwu said.
He emphasized that a properly managed subsidy system, coupled with reforms to curb corruption in the oil sector, could ensure affordable fuel without compromising government revenue.
Kachikwu criticized the Tinubu administration’s economic policies, claiming they prioritize foreign interests over local welfare.
He proposed redirecting funds from what he called “wasteful government spending” to finance the subsidy, alongside boosting local refining capacity to reduce reliance on imported fuel.
“We have the resources to make fuel affordable again. It’s about political will and transparency,” he added.
The former candidate also addressed the ongoing debate around the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) Limited’s financial opacity, accusing it of mismanaging funds that could support subsidies.
He vowed to overhaul the NNPC and ensure accountability if elected.Kachikwu’s remarks come amid rising public discontent over fuel prices, which have soared to over ₦900 per litre in some areas since the subsidy removal.
His pledge has sparked reactions, with some users supporting the idea of restoring subsidies, while others argue it could strain Nigeria’s economy further, citing past issues of corruption in the subsidy regime.
As the 2027 election approaches, Kachikwu’s promise positions him as a populist contender, though analysts question the feasibility of his plan given Nigeria’s fiscal challenges and the International Monetary Fund’s push for subsidy removal.
Kachikwu, however, remains confident, urging Nigerians to back his vision for an “economically inclusive” Nigeria.
