Senate President Godswill Akpabio has been named the recipient of the prestigious 2025 International Peace Award by the Global Peace Movement International (GPMI), recognizing his outstanding contributions to global diplomacy and parliamentary excellence.
The announcement, made by GPMI President Dr. Mike Uyi, highlights Akpabio’s pivotal role in restoring Nigeria’s membership in the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), a seat the country lost over five decades ago.
Dr. Uyi praised Akpabio’s “visionary and transformative” leadership, particularly as an Executive Member and esteemed Commissioner of the IPU.
“This distinction is a testament to his exceptional leadership and vision,” Uyi stated. “His efforts have not only reinstated Nigeria’s global parliamentary voice but also uplifted the nation’s diplomatic presence on the world stage.”
Akpabio’s contributions extend beyond parliamentary diplomacy.
At the 6th World Conference of Speakers of Parliaments in Geneva, Switzerland, he urged global parliamentarians to unite for peace, justice, and a shared destiny.
Speaking on the theme “A World in Turmoil: Multilateralism for Peace, Justice and Prosperity for All,” Akpabio emphasized collective solutions to global challenges like armed conflict, climate disruption, and youth disillusionment. He highlighted Nigeria’s resilience, noting, “We are not defined by what we face, but by how we rise.”
The Senate President’s legislative efforts have also focused on securing Nigeria’s future through laws such as the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons Act, the Terrorism Prevention and Prohibition Act, and the Out-of-School Children Education Act, aimed at addressing insecurity, education, and social inclusion.
The International Peace Award will be formally presented to Senator Akpabio in August 2025. GPMI lauded his commitment to fostering peace, unity, and cooperation across borders, stating, “His work continues to inspire a new generation of leaders and citizens alike.”
