Former England and Barcelona star Gary Lineker has disclosed that several elite European clubs hesitated to sign Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen due to doubts about his off-field behavior.
Osimhen, who secured a €75 million transfer to a top Turkish club, was previously a prime target for clubs like Chelsea, Manchester United, Arsenal, and Paris Saint-Germain.
His stellar performances for Napoli had made him one of the most sought-after forwards globally.
Speaking on The Rest is Football podcast, Lineker praised Osimhen’s talent, recalling his standout displays against Leicester in the Europa League.
“He was sensational for Napoli,” Lineker said. “But I’ve heard whispers that some clubs were wary because he occasionally goes off the radar for a few days, raising slight concerns about his character.”
These reported concerns, rather than any lack of ability, may have deterred Premier League clubs from pursuing Osimhen during the 2025 summer transfer window.
