President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the appointment of Professor Mathew Adamu as the Acting Vice-Chancellor of Yakubu Gowon University (formerly University of Abuja) for a three-month term, effective Monday, August 11, 2025.
The announcement was made in a letter dated August 8, 2025, signed by Abel Enitan, Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Education, and addressed to Prof. Adamu.
The letter, referenced FME/HE/CU/50/12/97 and titled “Appointment as the Acting Vice-Chancellor of Yakubu Gowon University, Abuja,” stated:
“I am pleased to inform you that the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, His Excellency Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR, has graciously approved your appointment as the Acting Vice-Chancellor of Yakubu Gowon University, Abuja.”
The appointment follows the conclusion of Professor Patricia Manko Lar’s six-month tenure as Acting Vice-Chancellor, which began in February 2025 after the dismissal of Prof. Aisha Maikudi.
Prof. Adamu, previously of the Department of Veterinary Parasitology and Entomology at the College of Veterinary Medicine, Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University, Makurdi, is a fellow of the College of Veterinary Surgeons of Nigeria and a member of the Knight of St. Mulumba (KSM).
His appointment marks him as the second Acting Vice-Chancellor appointed by the Federal Government this year.
The Permanent Secretary directed Prof. Adamu to collaborate with the university’s Governing Council to finalize the ongoing process for appointing a substantive Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with statutory provisions and guidelines.
