Former presidential aide, Bashir Ahmad has called for a nuanced approach to political discourse in Nigeria, emphasizing that disagreeing with Labour Party leader Peter Obi should not be misconstrued as an attack on his Igbo heritage or personal character.
In a recent statement shared on his X handle, Ahmad sought to clarify the distinction between political differences and ethnic rivalry.
“Our brothers should understand that disagreeing with Mr. Peter Obi politically is not an attack on his person and certainly not on his tribe,” Ahmad wrote.
“Politics should never be seen as ethnic rivalry. We all know that PO is not the sole representative of his entire ethnic group.
So, disagreeing with his political stance should not be translated as bigotry in any way.”
Ahmad, who served as media aide to former President Muhammadu Buhari, recounted a recent encounter with Obi, describing him as “a good person” whom he respects.
“I recently met him, and I genuinely respect him as a person. However, politically, we do not share the same views and directions, and that should be perfectly okay and acceptable,” he added.
The statement comes in the context of Ahmad’s history of engaging with Obi’s political activities. In July 2025, Ahmad faced backlash from Obi’s supporters after sharing photos of himself with the former Anambra governor during a condolence visit in Daura, explaining the interaction as a moment of civility, not political alignment.
He has also previously acknowledged Obi’s significant political influence, noting in 2024 that Obi’s 6,101,533 votes across 11 states in the 2023 presidential election demonstrated broader national support compared to other candidates like Rabiu Kwankwaso.
