In a bold and provocative statement, former Nigerian Minister of Transportation and ex-Governor of Rivers State, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, has announced his intention to run for president in 2027, vowing to serve only a single four-year term if elected.
Speaking during a Channels TV interview on July 3, 2025, Amaechi declared, “I will rule for four years only. If I spend more than one term, stone me,” signaling his commitment to a brief tenure and inviting public accountability.
Amaechi, made this pledge while discussing his involvement in a new opposition coalition under the African Democratic Congress (ADC), which includes political heavyweights like former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and Nasir El-Rufai.
The coalition aims to challenge President Bola Tinubu’s administration in the 2027 presidential election, citing unprecedented economic hardship under the current government.
Amaechi criticized the Tinubu administration, stating that Nigerians are suffering and would be “dead and buried” if Tinubu secures a second term.
The 60-year-old politician, who served as Rivers State Governor from 2007 to 2015 and as Transportation Minister from 2015 to 2022, emphasized his belief in power rotation between Nigeria’s North and South.
He recalled his role in opposing the PDP government in 2015 to ensure power returned to the North, arguing that a similar balance must be maintained by allowing the South to complete its tenure.
“The way Nigeria is, you must keep to that agreement—unwritten agreement—that says South eight years, North eight years,” Amaechi said.
