The Department of State Services (DSS) has revealed in court that the perpetrators of the June 5, 2022, attack on St. Francis Catholic Church in Owo, Ondo State, have connections to foreign terrorist organizations.
During the arraignment of five suspects—Idris Abdulmalik Omeiza, Al Qasim Idris, Jamiu Abdulmalik, Abdulhaleem Idris, and Momoh Otuho Abubakar—before a Federal High Court in Abuja on August 19, 2025, the DSS alleged that the defendants were members of the Al Shabab terrorist group, operating a cell in Kogi State.
The attack, which claimed over 40 lives and injured more than 100 worshippers, was allegedly planned during meetings held between May 30 and June 4, 2022, in Kogi and Ondo States.
The suspects, charged with nine counts of terrorism, are accused of using improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and AK-47 rifles to carry out the assault in furtherance of their extremist ideology.
All five pleaded not guilty.Justice Emeka Nwite ordered the defendants to be remanded in DSS custody and granted access to their families and lawyers. The trial is set to continue on August 19, 2025.
