Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has publicly criticized his predecessor, Godwin Obaseki, for the dire state of roads across the state, attributing the widespread infrastructure decay to eight years of neglect under Obaseki’s administration.
During an inspection tour of dilapidated road networks in Edo Central Senatorial District over the weekend, Okpebholo described the inherited infrastructure as a “trail of collapsed roads” that has stifled economic growth and endangered lives.
The governor specifically inspected critical roads in Uromi, Esan North East Local Government Area, including Onewa-Udomi-Ibhiolulu-Afada-Idumoza-Eko-Uwaya-Ewora, New Agbor Road, and Illushin Road.
Standing on the washed-out stretch of New Agbor Road, Okpebholo highlighted its strategic importance as a vital link between Edo State and eastern Nigeria, connecting to Agbor, Asaba, and Onitsha.
“This road is a gateway to the North and East, yet it’s barely motorable. A young girl recently lost her life to flooding here. This is the painful legacy left by Obaseki and the PDP,” he lamented, referencing a tragic incident caused by poor road conditions during a recent downpour.
Okpebholo, who assumed office in 2024, accused Obaseki’s administration of prioritizing “propaganda and surface-level projects” over critical infrastructure, leaving rural communities cut off and economic activities hampered.
“For eight years, the people of Edo suffered from bad roads and poor infrastructure. This is what I inherited, and we are determined to fix it,” he stated, citing a directive from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu during a recent meeting urging governors to prioritize road repairs.
The governor announced that his administration has already engaged reputable construction firms to commence immediate palliative measures on the affected roads, with plans for comprehensive rehabilitation to follow.
“We are here with contractors to assess the roads firsthand and initiate solutions. Work will begin soon to make these roads motorable and safe,” Okpebholo assured residents. He emphasized that restoring these roads would boost trade, enhance connectivity, and prevent further loss of life.
