Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir David Lawal, has declared that the North will support a presidential candidate in the 2027 election who demonstrates a deep understanding of the region’s challenges, regardless of their geographical or ethnic origin.
In a statement during an interview with Channels TV on Monday, Lawal emphasized that the North’s priority is a leader committed to unity and addressing critical issues such as insecurity, poverty, and underdevelopment.
Lawal stressed that the North is seeking a candidate capable of building bridges across Nigeria while prioritizing the region’s unique challenges, including the lingering effects of the Boko Haram insurgency and economic disparities.
“What matters is that the candidate understands the importance of a united Nigeria,” he said, dismissing identity politics based on religion or ethnicity.
He accused the Tinubu-led administration of pursuing policies perceived as anti-North, fueling discontent in the region.
Lawal’s remarks align with a broader sentiment among northern leaders, as echoed by Dr. Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, a former aide to President Tinubu, who recently stated that no candidate can win the presidency in 2027 without the North’s support.
Baba-Ahmed urged the region to reject divisive politicians and focus on competence and integrity.
The statement comes amid growing political maneuvering ahead of the 2027 elections, with northern stakeholders reportedly mobilizing to consolidate their influence.
