Nigerian Gov’t Audits Civil Service with BVN, NIN to End Ghost Workers

The Nigerian government has launched a comprehensive personnel audit for civil servants, mandating the collection of Bank Verification Numbers (BVN) and National Identification Numbers (NIN) to create a verified digital database.

The initiative aims to eradicate ghost workers and enhance workforce efficiency.

Didi Walson-Jack, Head of the Civil Service of the Federation (HCSF), announced the policy in a statement issued by Mrs. Eno Olotu, Director of Information and Public Relations at the HCSF office in Abuja, on Wednesday.

The audit aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda to modernize and streamline the civil service.

The exercise will evaluate the workforce’s size, structure, and skill sets, identifying gaps in critical areas such as ICT, project management, public finance, and data analysis.

By linking employee records to NIN and BVN, the government seeks to resolve discrepancies and provide an accurate overview of its personnel.

Walson-Jack will chair the steering committee overseeing the audit, which includes key permanent secretaries, the Accountant-General of the Federation, the Director-General of the Budget Office, representatives from the Presidency, and relevant consultants.
