The Federal Government of Nigeria has signed an Exchange of Notes (E/N) agreement with China, securing a $1 million grant to bolster flood relief efforts in Northern Nigeria.
The signing ceremony, held in Abuja, was led by Nigeria’s Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, who hailed the grant as a vital and timely boost for communities grappling with severe flooding.
“This generous support shows the enduring Nigeria-China partnership, rooted in mutual respect and a commitment to sustainable development,” the Minister stated.
He pledged that the Ministry, in collaboration with relevant agencies, would ensure transparent and effective use of the funds, with a joint monitoring mechanism established alongside the Chinese Embassy to guarantee accountability.
The grant will support Nigeria’s ongoing relief programs, aiding in the restoration of livelihoods in the most affected regions while strengthening bilateral ties in areas like infrastructure, trade, and agriculture.
Chinese Ambassador You Dunhai, marking one year in Nigeria, expressed solidarity with the flood victims, noting that China faces similar challenges.
He highlighted the deepening ties following President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s September 2024 visit to China and cited President Xi Jinping’s June 2025 pledge for zero-tariff access for African exports, including Nigeria’s, to drive economic growth.
“China stands with Nigeria in this crisis, united by mutual respect and shared goals,” Ambassador You affirmed, offering condolences for the flood devastation.
