The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) announced on August 21, 2025, that upkeep loans for students will now be strictly tied to their institution’s academic session.
In a statement released on their official X page, NELFUND clarified that upkeep payments will cease once an academic year ends, requiring students to reapply at the start of each session to access both institutional charges and upkeep funds.
The agency emphasized the importance of timely applications, stating, “Students must apply for a loan at the beginning of every academic session to benefit from both tuition and upkeep support for that year.”
NELFUND also urged tertiary institutions to upload their academic calendars early to ensure students receive full upkeep benefits without delays.
“NELFUND remains committed to providing fair, transparent, and effective loan support to Nigerian students,” the statement added.
The policy aims to streamline loan disbursements and align them with academic cycles, addressing previous concerns about payment irregularities.
Students and institutions are encouraged to comply with the new guidelines to maximize access to the loan scheme.
