NEC Approves Funding Boost for NEMA, Ministries to Enhance Flood Preparedness

The National Economic Council (NEC), chaired by Vice President Kashim Shettima, has approved new funding for the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and key ministries to strengthen Nigeria’s flood preparedness and disaster response ahead of the 2025 rainy season.

The decision was made during an NEC meeting on Thursday at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

The council directed immediate financial support for federal ministries, agencies, and State Emergency Management Agencies (SEMAs) across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory to prevent devastating floods.

Speaking to journalists after the meeting, Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, emphasized a comprehensive approach.

“This intervention extends beyond federal agencies to support states and local emergency services, ensuring tangible flood prevention and relief efforts,” he said.

Funding will be allocated to NEMA and ministries such as Water Resources, Environment, and Budget and Economic Planning.

Edun stressed the need for a “whole-of-society approach,” involving all government tiers in enforcing planning laws and equipping response teams.

“Our goal is improved coordination and preparedness, building on last year’s efforts to sustain momentum,” he added.
