The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has confiscated banned, expired, and unregistered products worth over N1.5 billion in a sweeping enforcement operation at the cosmetics section of the Lagos Trade Fair market.
The raid, conducted on Saturday, August 3, 2025, targeted the circulation of unsafe consumer goods and underscored NAFDAC’s ongoing commitment to safeguarding public health.
Led by Dr. Martins Iluyomade, Director of Investigation and Enforcement, the operation uncovered several warehouses stocked with counterfeit cosmetics, food items, and other regulated products lacking proper registration or labeling, including expiry dates.
A truckload of fake NAFDAC-regulated products was also intercepted during the raid, with the driver fleeing the scene, though the vehicle was secured by NAFDAC personnel.
“This exercise is part of our national action plan to eliminate harmful products from markets nationwide,” Iluyomade told journalists after the operation.
“We’ve received numerous complaints from Nigerians about unsafe products, and this seizure is a direct response to those concerns.”
Iluyomade revealed that some of the confiscated goods were banned items that entered the country illegally, bypassing mandatory testing procedures, while others were expired products still displayed for sale.
“These products pose serious risks to human health, with some containing harmful or carcinogenic chemicals that can cause long-term complications,” he warned.
The agency’s process involves initial visual inspections to ensure compliance with labeling and packaging standards, followed by laboratory testing to detect toxic substances.
The total value of the seized goods is estimated at over N1.5 billion, and NAFDAC has invited warehouse owners linked to the unwholesome products for questioning.
“If found guilty, they will face the full weight of the law,” Iluyomade stated, emphasizing that food and drug regulation is a matter of national security.
He urged traders to comply with NAFDAC standards, warning that bypassing registration endangers lives.
“Our mission is not anti-business; we aim to guide businesses while prioritizing consumer safety,” he added.
