Resident doctors at Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) Teaching Hospital in Ogbomoso, Oyo State, commenced an indefinite strike on July 29, 2025, disrupting medical services as they press for the resolution of long-standing grievances.
The Association of Resident Doctors (ARD), in a letter dated July 28, 2025, addressed to the hospital’s Chief Medical Director, Prof. Olawale Olakulehin, announced the action after the Oyo State government and hospital management failed to meet their demands following a three-week ultimatum issued on July 8.
The strike, led by ARD President Dr. Stephen Adedokun and General Secretary Dr. Adedapo Mustapha, follows a suspended month-long strike in April 2025, which was halted to allow negotiations.
Key demands include the implementation of the minimum wage for LAUTECH doctors, already applied to other state health workers, payment of the Medical Residency Training Fund (MRTF), accoutrement allowances, and arrears for salary upgrades.
The doctors also cited a drastic reduction in staff, with numbers dropping from 270 to fewer than 65, exacerbating burnout and workload issues due to resignations and failure to recruit new personnel.
In an open letter to Governor Seyi Makinde on July 4, 2025, the ARD described the hospital’s situation as “alarming,” highlighting unpaid February salary shortfalls, dilapidated call rooms, and unapproved deductions for insurance indemnity.
“The pay disparity and lack of action have led to an inability to attract new doctors, placing an unsustainable burden on remaining staff,” Dr. Adedokun told reporters, noting prior unsuccessful meetings with the state’s Commissioners for Health and Establishment.
The indefinite strike has raised concerns about patient care, with reports of stranded patients and disrupted services at the hospital.
While the Oyo State government has not issued an official response, a source within the hospital management indicated ongoing efforts to engage the doctors, though no resolution has been reached.
The ARD has vowed to continue the strike until their demands are fully addressed, urging swift action to restore normalcy to healthcare delivery in Ogbomoso.
