The Labour Party (LP), under the leadership of Senator Nenadi Usman, has publicly dissociated itself from a planned protest at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) headquarters in Abuja, scheduled for Wednesday, August 6, 2025.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by Ken Asogwa, Senior Special Adviser on Media to the interim national chairman, the party described the organizers as "impostors" and clarified that the demonstration lacks the party’s approval or backing.
The statement read, “The attention of the Labour Party has been drawn to an invitation circulating regarding a purported protest scheduled for tomorrow, August 6, 2025, at INEC’s headquarters.
"This protest is allegedly being organized by individuals claiming to operate under the Labour Party’s banner.
"We categorically state that this protest is not sanctioned by the Labour Party.
"The organizers are unknown to the party’s leadership, and the action lacks our approval.” The party urged the public to view anyone participating in or promoting the protest as acting without its consent and labeled them as political impersonators and mischief-makers.”
The LP also commended INEC’s recent decision to reject a list of candidates submitted by the faction led by former chairman Julius Abure for upcoming national bye-elections and local council elections.
The party expressed relief, stating that INEC’s action aligns with a Supreme Court ruling on April 4, 2025, which affirmed that Abure’s tenure expired on June 8, 2023.
“We urge INEC to remain steadfast and continue to disregard the desperate antics of these individuals,” the statement added, calling for the commission to publish the authentic candidate list submitted by the current leadership and update its platforms to reflect the lawful party leadership.
The Labour Party further appealed to security agencies to take note of the unauthorized protest and act swiftly.
“Those planning to stage this protest are not representatives of the Labour Party. We call for their immediate arrest and prosecution in accordance with the law,” Asogwa stated.
The party emphasized its commitment to lawful engagement and urged the public to remain vigilant against acts of political sabotage.
This development comes amid internal divisions within the LP, highlighted by the exclusion of candidates from the Abure-led faction for the August 16 bye-elections in the Federal Capital Territory and 12 other states.
The Abure faction had announced plans to march to INEC’s headquarters with civil society organizations to protest their exclusion, which they described as an abuse of power by INEC.
However, the Usman-led leadership has firmly distanced itself from these actions, reinforcing its stance as the legitimate authority within the party.
