Governor Nasir Idris of Kebbi State has appointed Sanusi Mika’ilu Sami as the new Emir of Zuru, filling a vacancy that has persisted since the deposition of the previous monarch.
The announcement was made on Thursday, August 28, 2025, during a colorful turbaning ceremony at the Government House in Birnin Kebbi, marking a significant step toward restoring traditional leadership in the Zuru Emirate.
Sami, a respected community leader and historian from the Zuru area, was selected from a list of qualified candidates presented by kingmakers following a rigorous selection process.
The position became vacant after the dethronement of the former Emir, HRH Muhammadu Sani Sami, in 2023, amid allegations of misconduct, which led to a period of interregnum and calls for stability in the region.
Governor Idris, who congratulated the new emir, emphasized that the appointment aligns with the state’s commitment to promoting peace, cultural heritage, and good governance.
“This is a moment of joy for the people of Zuru and Kebbi State at large. Sanusi Mika’ilu Sami brings wisdom, integrity, and a deep understanding of our traditions, which will guide the emirate toward progress and unity,” the governor stated during the event attended by traditional rulers, government officials, and community leaders.
The new Emir, in his acceptance speech, pledged to foster development, resolve lingering disputes, and collaborate with the state government on initiatives for education, agriculture, and security in the predominantly agrarian Zuru Emirate.
He also called for the support of all stakeholders to ensure a smooth transition.
The appointment has been hailed by residents and stakeholders as a positive development, with many expressing hope that it will enhance social cohesion in the area, which has faced occasional tensions.
The Zuru Emirate, one of the prominent traditional institutions in Kebbi State, plays a vital role in mediating local affairs and preserving the cultural identity of the diverse communities in the region.
